Veterinary Physiotherapy

Equine and Canine Physiotherapy - Yorkshire and surrounding areas

Equine and Canine Veterinary Physiotherapy is an evidence based profession, which uses a holistic approach treating every patient individually. Physiotherapy uses a variety of assessment, treatment and rehabilitative techniques. At Yorkshire Animal Therapy we pride ourselves on utilising a wide range of tools to achieve the most optimal outcome.

Equine & Canine Physiotherapy can be used;
  • Alongside veterinary care to help treat or manage a variation of musculoskeletal or neurological cases
  • As an excellent tool pre and post surgery to enhance quality of repair and provides optimal patient treatment
  • To maintain or enhance performance by minimising the compensatory effects of day to day training
  • For the elderly patient to maintain/improve movement in a non-invasive, pain-free manner

What Does Veterinary Physiotherapy Involve?

Manual Therapies - this uses a range of different massage and soft tissue techniques, joint mobilisations and stretches.

Electrotherapies use of therapeutic machines to treat a variety of conditions:
  • Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) – Uses red and infrared light energy to target the tissues. Mainly used in superficial, vascular tissue. Best used on wounds, oedema/swelling and pain.
  • TENS – Uses electrical stimulation to reduce pain sensation, increase blood flow, improve muscle function and reduce muscle spasm.
  • NMES - Uses electrical stimulation to maintain/strengthen muscle,  improve muscle function, prevents muscle loss /atrophy and increases blood supply.

Remedial exercise programmes - each plan is devised on a case by case basis and is specifically tailored to the patient and owner’s situation. They’re designed to target areas of weakness, improve range of motion and proprioception.

Alongside the programme, Dominique will also make recommendations to alter patients environment. If necessary, will also advise referral to other paraprofessional if required including referring back to your veterinarian when necessary.
